How to run a server on a NAS server

I thought NAS was basically just a network hard drive. And you can't run programs off a storage hard drive.

you can use it as a torrent downloader and that kind of stuff.. so why shouldn 't it run a tm server

what can you actually access? you have a remote desktop?
