HawkGer's Canyon Mods

Postby HawkGer » 20.08.2011, 03:35

Currently Work In Progress: Lego Mod (resume work in one week)

Here I present my finished RPG mods for Canyon.

All the mods are specifically optimized for RPG tracks to keep the filesize under 50mb which ment that I had to prioritize on the Arena textures. All the scenery textures are mostly just low quality....but I tried to make them fit into the environment.

All the mods are: Free to download, free to distribute and free to edit!
You can put these mods on your Manialink or elsewhere and edit them however you like...but I don't want you to sell them for Planets. That's my only wish. And of course crediting me as the original author would be appropiate.
Thanks and now for the mods:

LEGO
Image
Let's play LEGO! This mod is my take on the toy every kid loved in their childhood. So why not renew those beloved memories by putting it into the most awesome toy for grown-ups: TrackMania!
It is recommended to play with 'very nice' settings when using this mod, otherwise you won't be able to see any depth in the bricks.

The Lost Tribe
Image
This mod is set in the african savanna/grasslands where the last unknown ancient tribe resides. Lots of wood and dry material textures were used to give this savanna impression.
Download, locator and pics: http://www.maniapark.com/ressource.php?id=133

Isla De Muerta
Image
IslaDeMuerta...the fictional island from Pirates of the Caribbean on which lots of gold was hidden by pirates. I tried to achieve an atmosphere which resembles such a pirate gold mine. I deviated though from the look of the fictional island, insofar that it doesn't have a dark feeling, more like a tropical atmosphere.

Mass Effect
Image
A transformation of the Canyon into a moon landscape with blocks that resemble the architecture found in the game Mass Effect. A lot of time went into the making of this mod and it's one of my favorite mods. Hope I don't disappoint, having said that

Download (because the one on ManiaPark costs Planets): http://www.vinummusik.de/Trackmania2/Mods/MassEffect_Canyon.zip

Biohazard
Image
A nuclear waste facility gone overkill. That's the scenario you will find yourself in this mod. I tried to make the atmosphere as toxic as possible and to give the impression of being inside a facility.
Download, locator and pics: http://www.maniapark.com/ressource.php?id=194

Cryo
Image
The idea behind this mod was to create a setting that would resemble my idea of the ShootMania environment Cryo....a military complex set in a snow environment.
Download, locator and pics: http://www.maniapark.com/ressource.php?id=20

Ancient Egypt
Image
In this modification I tried to create an atmosphere resembling an egyptian pyramid/temple. A lot of sand textures, stone walls and hieroglyphs included.
Download, locator and pics: http://www.maniapark.com/ressource.php?id=24

City of Z
Image
"City of Z" is the name of an ancient city located in the Amazonas, built by an unknown civilisation. Today only some fragments remain...but we can try to imagine how it looked like in earlier times. I applied lots of vegetation onto the surfaces, mixed with cryptic symbols. I hope the atmosphere turned out to be convincing.
Download, locator and pics: http://www.maniapark.com/ressource.php?id=25

Medieval Fantasy
Image
Upon beginning to create this mod, my goal was to give the mod a similar feeling as the stadium "Middle Age" mod. It got dragged into a fantasy atmosphere however somewhere in the mod-making process...and I'm quite happy about that. So there you go...a fantasy middle age mod. I hope it suits your taste!
Download, locator and pics: http://www.maniapark.com/ressource.php?id=23

Greek Antiquity
Image
Basically this is a remake of my "A Romanorum Superbia" mod in stadium...only looking much nicer (I hope so). The setting depicts a greek temple and what is associated with its surroundings. Most of the textures are therefore of polished stones with an antique feel to it.
Download, locator and pics: http://www.maniapark.com/ressource.php?id=22

IRAQ
Image
I chose the setting of this mod to be the hot and dry outskirts of Iraq with a lot of weathered and destroyed surfaces. The only surfaces that are not destroyed are the oil pipelines ^^
Download, locator and pics: http://www.maniapark.com/ressource.php?id=21

Grande Muraille Canyon
Image
This mod is a remake of the original stadium GrandeMuraille mod. I tried to recreate this kind of Tomb Raider feeling that the original GM mod offered. An aged temple atmosphere with a bit of vegetation but with a hint of lasting civilisation. Hope the atmosphere is as good as the original one.

You can also use the locators from the vinummusik site in case you don't like the service from ManiaPark:

 Just going to take a look.

First mod I see you have blacked out the DecalsGround_D.dds and DecalsGround_S.dds. I guess this is to disable them. Just a thought but if you do this I would recommend making them a lot smaller like 64 x 64. Will make your mod smaller in size.

That's not possible I think to make it smaller. I tried that at first too but it creates those red/black graphic errors over all textures. So not an option. And due to compression as far as I can see it those images are compressed to 128kb total. So not really a concern I would say ;)
Ah I should add pictures...totally forgot that ^^
And CityofZ mod is reserved for Kryw now. I took out the link. Hope it's okay for everyone...

I also noticed that you can't make some specular textures too small. In Beta2 it was still allowed. They even had the low quality texture pack where all specualar and normal textures were only 1kb big ^^ But now when they are too small they tend to show little light dots on the surface...even when all channels are completely black :I

I didn't kill the locator, it's still uploaded. So anyone with half a brain can figure out the URL. I just hoped noone would use it before Kryw does. Well...too bad for him. And he will be pissed at me :D

I want to work on a mod but I want to take my time because I need to do a tutorial at the same time. Any ideas on what I should make the Canyon look like? Hopefully something that will be useful to you guys at the end

Maybe a remake of the lego mod? I'm sure with the improved rendering engine it would look quite stunning. But might not be such a good mod to get started in Canyon. I wanted to try my hands at this mod next...but if you say you want to do it it's no problem.
There are still so many themes left. Hard to recommend just one to you ^^
My next mod will be a Roman/Greek one btw.

Lego :( That was my hardest mod. I made the original lego piece in photoshop myself for that and for it to look right I think it would need all normals and speculars and would be a big mod lol

I think I'll start somewhere at the bottom and work up since I have to write a tut along side of it. maybe a wood or an old and rusty mod lol

I will try to make a lego mod anyway. The specular and normals would be big, but at least the diffuse could be made small I guess. What do you mean PCC about management packs? And what did you try online?

Okay I have finally been reading up on those Pack files. I guess I will keep my mods "open source" for the members in this forum. Elsewhere I could sell them for planets. This is the best approach I think for RPG mods since they usually get modified in time by someone other than the original creator. And as far as I can see it is not possible to access the texture files when having the mod in a pack.

When making a Pack it is possible to add a locator PCC, I tested that. What is really stupid though is that when sending the pack to someone else you can't include the locator inside the Pack file. So you always have to send it seperately. Or I was just too stupid to make it work. But I don't think so.

It is so good you mentioned this. I put my mod into a Pack, made a locator, started the track online and see what we got here:
Image Image

This bug only appears when a mod loads online after it has been put into a pack. If the mod is a zip, there are no problems. And it happens to all textures in any mod, as far as I can see. So this bug would be a big blow to the RPG online experience. Btw I thought that the bug would disappear after restarting the game...but that is not the case. Even if you load the mod in the editor it stil stays.
I will report this bug and pray it will get fixed. Maybe you could test this too to see if I'm not the only one who has this bug?

Haha okay so we discovered the same bug at the same time ^^ And you even used the same mod as me to test the bug xD I made a post in the Beta section (the one that is hidden to most ppl)

Edit: Greek mod is nearly finished. And I tested my first lego texture. This mod is so on! So much fun :D

A match stick mod is a very original idea, would be interesting to see how such a mod would turn out.
I have updated my first post with links to new mods. There are seven mods total now. And they are all probably in the final state....unless someone mentions that there are some bugged or ugly textures. Hadn't had much time to test the final mods but I hope they are complete.
I will have to go into a week of mod-making break from tomorrow on...but after that I will be back ;)

ManiaPark is now open for the public! So in case anyone makes a mod for Canyon...they can now upload it to ManiaPark. Locators are provided by ManiaPark as well.
I updated the first post with better text and links to ManiaPark. The Vinummusik links stay too...so you can just decide which locators to use.
In the zip files of the mods I have included a .loc file now. So you can just put that into your mod folder...in case you want to use the Vinummusik locator. To use the ManiaPark locator, download it from the MP modpage.
