Problem with transparency

Hi everyone :)

I'm making a mod for my new track, and I recently tried to make a texture with transparency.
So, to do it I added black areas and saved the texture in DXT1 1bit alpha. (I made the specular and normal map too).
But in game there is no transparency. The black areas, that are supposed to be transparent, are still blacks...
I tried many ways to make it work (saving in several others formats, making alpha by removing the black areas...) always the same result : no transparency in game :dash:

I searched everywhere on the forum and even on the whole internet, every single tutorial say the same thing : to make transparency you just need to add black and save in DXT 1bit alpha... ;(

What I'm doing wrong ?

I use adobe photoshop elements 7.0

Hi, try this for simple grids and such.

1. Make your texture, then create a new alpha channel. In the alpha channel make an image which is black and white, the white parts will show the texture, the black parts will be transparent. Save the image as dxt5 interpolated alpha.


2. Delete the alpha channel and create the normal and diffuse maps as you usually would, save both as dxt5 also.

Works for me.

I didn't do exactly what you said with the black and white image, I just replaced the black by alpha channel and saved as DXT5 interpolated alpha (a combinaison i have not tried yet^^) and I have transparency in game ! :)

PS: The black and white image is a knid of opacity mask ?

The dxt5 format will allow graduations in transparency (opacity), which you would get even on black/white images if you had selections usng anti-alaising.
If you do a graduation from black to white across the greyscale you will see this effect. It opens up allsorts of possibilities.
Just unzip other peoples mods to see how its been done on theirs.
